Have you already pre-ordered the new Oura ring? The Pre-Order Updates section of our site is the place to check for new updates, important dates and exclusive sneak peeks. We’ll be publishing updates approximately every two weeks. In our second Pre-Order Update we look inside the new Oura ring.
In the picture above you can see the main parts of your new Oura ring:
A: The outer shell: made out of titanium with diamond-like coating (DLC)
B: The electronics: including processor, battery, memory, sensors
C: The inner molding: non-allergenic, seamless and medical-grade
When you’ll pick up the new Oura ring for the first time, you’ll probably be surprised at how light it feels. We’ve wanted to make the ring so light-weight that once you put it on your finger, you can forget about it. The outer shell is made out of titanium for this very reason. If you have the first Oura ring, you’ll know that it is made out of Zirconia, a very hard ceramic which is extremely scratch-proof but can crack if dropped on a hard surface. For the new ring, we opted for a titanium shell for its lightness, durability and versatility – even though it meant that the scratch-proofness drops from “practically impervious” to top jewelry standards.
Do you remember those images where it takes a group of people to move one of the early computers? A computer the size of a shipping container? Fast-forward a few decades and all that – and much more – fits inside a ring. The sensors measuring your physiological signals include: a temperature sensor, a gyroscope, a 3D accelerometer and an infrared optical pulse sensor. The infrared LEDs mean that there are no blinking lights on the ring that could disturb your sleep, because our eyes cannot see infrared wavelengths of light.
The ring can store up to 6 weeks of your data without needing to sync with your phone. You can also put the ring into airplane mode anytime you want and it’ll still track the same data.
The batteries are custom-designed for each ring size. Battery-life is, naturally, one of the pain points of nearly all wearables. With the new Oura ring, the battery life can be up to 7 days with a single charge. We know from personal experience that people have different habits when it comes to charging their Oura ring: some like to spend 15 minutes and do it every day, some like to top up the battery in one, slightly longer go. With the longer battery life, you can find a charging habit that suits you.
The new Oura ring is small, light-weight and extremely comfortable to wear. Wearing comfort has been one of our top priorities from the start, which is why we went with seamless medical-grade inner molding. And now with the introduction of wireless charging, the inside of the ring is just one smooth surface without the tiniest cavities or cracks to collect dirt that could irritate your skin. In practice, you won’t even feel the little bumps above the LEDs that ensure the measured signals are from the inside of your finger, not the outside.
However, as with any ring or anything that’s in close contact with your bare skin, you should allow your skin to breathe regularly. When you wash your hands with soap or eat a tangerine (for example) you should make sure that no possible irritants are left against your skin. Also just plain moisture left under the ring can cause a similar effect as a long bath (wrinkled fingertips, anyone?). With these simple care instructions you can rest assured that the Oura ring will be a friendly and compassionate 24⁄7 companion.
We’ll be back with another pre-order update in two weeks! Have a great week!
